Lip syncing is one of the most popular performance styles in the drag community. Queens showcase their talents all over social media platforms, on tv, and in clubs across the world. The art of lip sync has caught the attention of everyone and the drag scene and is beginning to grow rapidly because of it. RuPaul’s Drag Race is a very popular drag show that has the two bottom Queens of the week lip sync against each other to the same song to stay in the competition. This is called a “Lip Sync for your life!” and it is one of the most popular aspects of the show..
Lip syncing, or mouthing the words and acting out a popular song, is the most common performance style in the drag community. Even if a Queen is known for her shows or modeling skills, they still lip sync on tours or in clubs. Though nowadays queens even take it a step further. Queens have began to perform their own dance moves and gymnastics during their lip syncs. On the “Werq The World” tour in 2017 Violet Chachki, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7, lip synced while performing on a trapeze ring suspended in the air. In RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season 3 Aja performed a sickening lip sync and dance to her own song and death dropped off of an 8ft platform. Queens not only are known for their physical abilities but are now known for vocal ability. A lot of Queens have recently been recording their own songs and albums. Whether it be an uptempo dance number or a gentle ballad, Queens are impressing drag fans everywhere with their vocal ability. Some Queens, like recent winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season 3 Trixie Mattel, have made a career out of being drag singers. Trixie Mattel has launched 2 folk albums after her time on drag race. Her first album was “Two Birds” which grew some popularity in 2017. Trixie has now released, as of last week, “One Stone” (see the joke? Two birds, one stone?) and it has been number one on the iTunes charts for a couple days. Trixie performs her songs live as opposed to lip syncing to them while accompanying herself on the guitar and handheld harp. Many other Queens have began or have had successful singing careers like Alaska, Aja, Courtney Act, and more. Needless to say lip syncing and singing have become hugely popular in the drag community. Whether it's through RuPaul’s Drag Race or on tours and in clubs, Queens from all over show off their skills everyday. Not only is dance and voice a big aspect of lip sync but other artists have taken the skill and morphed it into many other ways. Whether that's trapeze or even performance art pieces, you never know what will come next. And that is why the art of lip sync is so popular. |
